Fix CRC errors and save your PST data

PST files are used for storing all your important data like emails, contacts, notes, appointments etc. Damaged PST files of MS Outlook fails to perform basic mailing operations such as copying files to a different location, sending and receiving mails, displaying mail folders, creating appointments etc.

Let us consider the following scenario when you try to copy the PST file from the root folder to another location on a different media, it throws the following error message:

“File file_path\file_name.pst could not be accessed. Data error. Cyclic redundancy check.”

The meaning of CRC is cyclic redundancy check and it is a code especially designed for detecting errors associated to unexpected changes in raw computer data. It is generally used for storage devices such as hard disk drives and digital network. And CRC errors indicate that there are bad spots on the hard drive, most probably in the hard drive where file is located. Besides, this you will also get another error message which indicates that the PST file could not be accessed. In order to resolve CRC errors in PST, it is necessary to know the cause of this error. Generally, CRC errors occur due to presence of bad sector on the hard disk. Sometimes this error also occurs if the PST file you are trying to copy is corrupted.

In this situation, you can open your account, without any difficulty. You will see all your contacts, emails, notes and other important data, but could not open any file. PST corruption is the most common reason of this error which can occur due to various reasons such as virus infection, system crash, operating system failure, improper system shutdown, application malfunction, and many more.

For resolving this error you should repair your hard disk before looking for other options and be sure that the target location is not causing problems. For doing this, first of all, try to copy the PST files to NUL. Open command prompt and go to original PST location. Then, use the 'copy' command for copying the files to NUL. If you are successful in copying the files, you have to repair or replace the destination drive. If the problem is related to original drive, you should repair it. For doing this, click start and run 'chkdsk' command with '/f 'switch. In case the actual PST is corrupted, you should use 'Scanpst.exe' for resolving CRC errors in PST.

But this tool fails to resolve the error, in case the problem has occurred due to header corruption or oversize PST files. In such situations you can use third-party PST repair tools. It executes PST recovery with accurate details and attachments. It supports almost all outlook versions like outlook 2007, 2003, 2002, and 2000.
